City Services - Pet Registration

Did you know that dog registration is compulsory in the ACT?

All dogs must be registered if:

  • The dog is over eight weeks old
  • The dog has been kept in the ACT for 28 days or more
  • The dog’s keeper has been a resident of the ACT for 28 days or more

All cats aged over eight weeks must be registered. Cats born before 1 July 2022 can be registered for free until 1 July 2023.

Pet owners will receive annual registration reminders by email, text or letter at least 14 days prior to their pet’s registration renewal date. Renewal dates are on the anniversary of when your pet was first registered. For instance, if a dog was registered on 1 September 2020, the renewal date will be 1 September each year.

If you hold a Seniors Card or other eligible concession, you can register your cat or dog for the first time for a one-off concessional fee of $20.70.

Keeping your pet’s registration details up to date is part of being a responsible pet owner. It also enables Domestic Animal Services to return lost pets to their owners as quickly as possible.

For more information on fees and how to register visit the City Services website at www.cityservices.act.gov.au/pets-and-wildlife/domestic-animals/dog-and-cat-registration.
